Research

Clinic staff, working with colleagues at the University of Glasgow are currently running two major research projects in important areas in football.

The FIELD project is looking at the incidence of dementia in former professional footballers compared to matched population controls. This vital research will report later in 2019 and aims to answer the key question of whether footballers have an increased risk of dementia.

The HEADER project looks to assess the burden of heading in youth footballers across the 55 National Football Association members of UEFA. Working in tandem with research colleagues in Germany, the research will give an insight into heading frequency in youth football and be able to contribute to the ongoing debate around heading in this age group.
