HOW TO ASSESS A RESPONSE

The AVPU scale is a simplified version of the Glasgow Coma Scale, and is used by non-medical professionals to assess someone’s response.

Alert: would you let this person drive your car?

Voice: responds when spoken to. This can be a wide range of responses from being slightly confused, to grunting when prompted

Pain: Response when pain is inflicted by a squeeze of the shoulders

Unresponsive: Fails to respond to verbal or pain stimuli
