Seizures and Epilepsy

TREATMENT OF SEIZURES

Key is to protect head from injury

  • Keep calm
  • Do not restrain-cushion head to prevent injury
  • Move any objects that may cause harm
  • Time the seizure to see how long it lasts
  • Open airway (in water roll to face up)
  • Loosen clothing around the neck/remove glasses
  • If asleep afterwards, protect and allow continued sleep
  • Place in Recovery Position when jerking stops
  • Monitor ABC and AVPU

Do Not:

  • Forcibly restrain
  • Put anything in mouth
  • Move unless in unsafe position
  • Try to wake casualty
  • Give anything to eat or drink until fully awake
