Seizures and Epilepsy

Epilepsy is defined as “an upset in the electrical activity of the brain, leading to seizure activity.”

  • Seizures can be caused by epilepsy, but can also be caused by head injury
  • Those with epilepsy have a tendency to have repeated seizures which start in the brain
  • They may be forewarned by a change in their senses such as smell or taste
  • Most seizures are short lived and self-limiting
  • All seizure types are different
  • Some people are completely controlled by medication, others have occasional seizures
