Section 1: The First Aider in Action

Confidentiality and Consent

  • Gain consent from your casualty to administer first aid treatment
  • If casualty can’t give consent (if unconscious), have a witness nearby if possible
  • If casualty refuses treatment, DO NOT commence first aid.  Instead make a record with (where possible) a witness to confirm the casualties refusal
  • If working with children, you should have parental consent to administer first aid treatment

Remember importance of confidentiality – Only pass on information to next of kin or paramedics
